I Got Rid of All My Bad Habits
Here’s How
Imagine a life where all your bad habits simply disappear. You no longer crave them because you already feel good. How much better would that be?
This is possible. You can reach this stage by understanding one key concept about life. This article will explain exactly how.
The Core of Human Desire
As humans, we all want just two things:
To feel good
To elevate our human experience
These two desires are interconnected and Wanting to feel good is not inherently bad. What truly matters is what you choose to do to achieve that feeling. Your choices determine whether you elevate your human experience or lower it.
Many of us find ourselves trapped in bad habits. We keep going back to them, even when we know they are not good for us. It is frustrating to realize that we are, in a way, slaves to our own minds. But when you learn to choose the right things to feel good, you break free from this cycle. That freedom is life-changing.
Why Bad Habits Exist
The reason bad habits are so common is that they offer instant rewards. They provide pleasure, but at a cost. Most bad habits lead to dependency and create a cycle of craving. To break free, you need to understand the difference between pleasure and joy.
The Difference Between Pleasure and Joy
Pleasure:
Short-lived
External (comes from a substance or activity)
Provides instant gratification with minimal effort
Fleeting and never fully satisfying
Pleasure creates a never-ending cycle of wanting more. Most bad habits are linked to pleasure, including:
Junk food and anything that spikes your blood sugar
Alcohol and drugs
Mindless scrolling on social media
Joy:
Long-term
Internal (comes from within)
Deeply fulfilling
Healthy and sustainable
Joy adds meaning to your life. It comes from experiences such as:
Feeling good after a morning walk
Watching a sunset
Spending time with loved ones
Having meaningful conversations
Holding a baby as they fall asleep
Joy Can Replace Bad Habits
When your life is filled with joy, you stop seeking instant gratification because you already feel good. The key is to actively create a life that brings genuine joy instead of chasing fleeting pleasure.
Balancing Highs and Lows in Life
Life is a mix of highs and lows. You cannot feel good all the time, and you cannot avoid challenges. If your life is filled with pleasure, which requires no effort, life will naturally introduce difficulties to create balance. However, when you cultivate joy, you create your own balance through meaningful effort.
10 Experiences That Bring Genuine Joy
Connecting with Loved Ones Spending quality time with family, friends, or a partner fosters a sense of belonging and warmth. A meaningful relationship is built on connection and shared purpose.
Achieving a Goal Accomplishing personal or professional milestones, no matter how big or small, creates fulfillment and pride.
Immersing in Nature Watching a sunrise, walking through a forest, or feeling the ocean breeze brings peace and joy through connection with the natural world.
Creative Expression Engaging in art, music, writing, or any creative outlet allows self-expression and sparks a deep sense of fulfillment. Personally, I have felt this firsthand. When I immerse myself in creativity, I enter a deep flow state. I even quit my job for it.
Acts of Kindness Helping someone in need, volunteering, or even a small kind gesture creates a sense of purpose and joy.
Learning Something New Mastering a new skill or discovering new knowledge stimulates the mind and brings a rewarding sense of growth.
Sharing Laughter Enjoying a good laugh, especially in the company of others, provides lighthearted and infectious joy.
Mindfulness and Presence Experiencing the present moment through meditation, gratitude, or simple awareness allows pure, unfiltered joy.
Physical Movement Activities like dancing, running, or practicing yoga release endorphins and create joy through movement and vitality.
Exploring a Passion Pursuing hobbies or interests that align with your heart and soul brings sustained joy and fulfillment.
The Path to Freedom
Any human who has all ten of these experiences in their life will not need anything that can be considered a bad habit. There will be no destructive addictions, no dependency on instant gratification.
Take a moment to reflect. Which of these ten experiences are missing from your life? Identify them and make the effort to bring them in. Joy is not something that happens by chance; it is something you cultivate. And when you do, you will naturally leave bad habits behind.
