In a world that constantly tempts us with comfort, luxury, and endless distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Evolution has wired us to chase these non-essentials, mistaking them for necessities, and it’s leading us down a path of dissatisfaction and unfulfillment.
Over the past 7 years, I’ve had the privilege of transforming the lives of over 80 individuals by focusing on what truly matters. Today, I want to share something critical that most people overlook—a concept rooted deeply in our evolutionary biology but with profound implications for how we live our lives today. We’re talking about the difference between essential and non-essential things.

They’re the extras—the comforts, luxuries, and distractions—that we often confuse with essentials. Examples include junk food, social media, binge-watching TV shows, and material possessions that don’t add real value to your life.
Understanding this distinction is the first step in reclaiming control over your life. It’s about cutting through the noise and getting back to the basics—focusing on what truly matters.
Breaking Down Life’s Priorities
To live a fulfilling life, we need to focus on three core aspects:
Health: Your physical and mental well-being.
Relationships: The meaningful connections with others.
Freedom: The ability to live life on your terms, which often involves financial stability.
Each of these areas has its own set of essentials and non-essentials. Identifying what’s essential in these three aspects of your life gives you a roadmap to fulfillment.
The Evolutionary Trap: Why We’re Wired for Distraction
Let’s dive into the core problem. Evolution has driven us to seek comfort, pleasure, and the path of least resistance. In the past, this was vital for survival. Our ancestors needed to conserve energy, avoid unnecessary risks, and take advantage of every opportunity to rest and eat high-calorie foods.
But today, this evolutionary programming leads us into traps. We’re surrounded by options designed to feel good in the moment—like junk food, social media, and endless entertainment—but these are non-essentials that add little value to our lives. Instead of enhancing our experience, they often detract from it, leading to a life that’s less fulfilling and more chaotic.
A Historical Perspective
If you look at our history, the further back you go, the fewer non-essential distractions there were. Social media didn’t exist 100 years ago. Neither did the constant barrage of advertisements, processed foods, and on-demand entertainment that we have today.
This is why I’m so interested in history and human evolution—it provides a clear lens through which we can understand the modern world. By looking back, we can better understand where we’ve gone off course and how to get back on track.

Health: What’s Essential vs. Non-Essential
Your health is your foundation. Without it, nothing else matters. But here’s the thing—most people get this wrong.
Essential for Health: A good diet, sunlight, sleep, and physical activity. These are the non-negotiables. Your diet should be primarily focused on essentials—meat, fruits, and vegetables.
Non-Essential for Health: Carbohydrates and alcohol. They’re not necessary for survival. You can live without them, and in many cases, you’d be better off reducing their presence in your life.
Relationships: What’s Essential vs. Non-Essential
Love, family, and kids—these are core to our human experience. But in today’s world, we often overlook what’s truly essential in our relationships.
Essential for Relationships: Genuine love, time, and care. Being present, showing that you care, and building genuine connections are irreplaceable.
Non-Essential for Relationships: Social media likes, virtual interactions, and superficial connections. These might feel good in the moment, but they don’t replace the depth of real human connection.
Freedom: What’s Essential vs. Non-Essential
In today’s context, freedom often equates to financial stability and the ability to live life on your own terms.
Essential for Freedom: Financial stability, independence, and the ability to make choices that align with your values.
Non-Essential for Freedom: Excessive spending, material possessions that don’t add value, and chasing societal standards that don’t align with your personal goals.
Context & Why It Matters
This isn’t just about what you eat or how you spend your time. It’s about your overall approach to life. The more you indulge in non-essential activities, the further you drift from what truly matters.
Benefits of Understanding the Difference
By understanding what’s essential and what’s not, you regain control over your life. You start making decisions that align with your true needs—choices that nourish your body, mind, and spirit, rather than deplete them. This clarity will allow you to live a life filled with purpose, health, and genuine happiness.

1. Identify the Essentials:
Sit down and list out what’s truly essential in your life, across the three core areas: Health, Relationships, and Freedom. Be honest with yourself—what do you really need to survive and thrive?
2. Minimize the Non-Essentials:
Look at your list of non-essentials and start minimizing them. This doesn’t mean you have to cut them out entirely, but limit their presence in your life.
3. Focus on What Matters:
Put your energy into the essentials. Invest time in your health, build meaningful relationships, and work towards your own version of freedom.

Regularly check in with yourself to see how you’re doing. Are you staying true to your essentials, or are the non-essentials creeping back in? Adjust as needed to stay on track.
